Wing Commander Oswald de Abreu: Goa's Brave Air Warrior Who Made the Supreme Sacrifice

Goa has produced many sons and daughters who have served the nation with distinction. Among them stands the inspiring story of Wing Commander Oswald de Abreu, a distinguished Indian Air Force fighter pilot from Chorao, whose life was defined by courage, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to the nation.
Born on 29 November 1970 and brought up in the serene island village of Chorao, Oswald de Abreu was raised in an environment that valued discipline, education, and strong moral values. These qualities shaped his character from an early age and laid the foundation for an exemplary military career.
He completed his schooling at Don Bosco High School, Panjim, where he excelled both academically and in character. Later, he pursued a degree in Zoology at Dhempe College, Miramar. Yet, his greatest ambition was to wear the uniform and serve the country. Determined to realise this dream, he successfully cleared the highly competitive Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination and was selected for pilot training at the Air Force Academy, Dundigal, near Hyderabad.
On 21 June 1993, he was commissioned into the Indian Air Force as a fighter pilot with the 151st Pilots' Course. Over the years, he steadily rose through the ranks, becoming Wing Commander on 21 June 2006.
Throughout his distinguished career, Wing Commander de Abreu flew some of the Indian Air Force's frontline combat aircraft, including the MiG-21, MiG-27, and the HJT-16 Kiran trainer aircraft. His exceptional flying skills and calm professionalism earned him the prestigious qualification of Qualified Flying Instructor (QFI), enabling him to train and mentor young fighter pilots who would go on to serve the nation.
His dedication and outstanding service were recognised when he received the Chief of Air Staff Commendation on 26 January 2000. He further enhanced his professional expertise by graduating from the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington, one of India's premier military institutions. His reputation as an accomplished fighter pilot also earned him the honour of leading an Indian Air Force delegation to the Republic of Singapore Air Force, where he flew their fighter aircraft during a professional exchange.
Among his significant appointments was serving as Flight Commander of No. 222 Squadron, the famed "Tigersharks", one of the Indian Air Force's most respected fighter squadrons. The squadron carries the inspiring motto "Vināśāya Duṣkṛtām"—"Destroyer of Evil"—reflecting its fearless operational spirit.
The Final Mission
In February 2010, Wing Commander Oswald de Abreu was serving with No. 222 Squadron at Air Force Station Hashimara in West Bengal. On 16 February 2010, he undertook an operational sortie from Hashimara to Bagdogra in a MiG-27 fighter aircraft.
Shortly after take-off, he reported a catastrophic engine fire. Despite his vast experience and exceptional flying skills, the emergency escalated rapidly, leaving virtually no opportunity to recover the aircraft. At around 2.15 p.m., the MiG-27 crashed within the airbase premises.
With his untimely death, the Indian Air Force lost one of its finest fighter pilots. Wing Commander de Abreu had accumulated more than fifteen years of operational flying experience and was admired by colleagues for his leadership, composure under pressure, and unwavering commitment to duty.
He exemplified the highest traditions of the Indian Air Force—discipline, honour, courage, and selfless service. His supreme sacrifice serves as a lasting reminder of the immense risks undertaken daily by those who safeguard India's skies.
A Lasting Legacy
Wing Commander Oswald de Abreu is survived by his wife, Janice de Abreu, their children Nadia and Nathan, his brother Orlando, and his sisters Claret and Marina, who reside in Canada and the United Kingdom.
Although his passing created an irreplaceable void for his family, friends, and fellow officers, his life continues to inspire generations of young Indians to serve the nation with courage, integrity, and dedication.
Goa remembers Wing Commander Oswald de Abreu not merely as a distinguished fighter pilot, but as a true patriot who lived by the motto of "Service Before Self" and laid down his life in the line of duty. His legacy remains etched in the proud history of the Indian Air Force and in the hearts of every Goan.
