The Multi-Court Commander: Captain Ashutosh Pednekar’s Journey from Naval Officer to World Racketlon Champion

Representing your country is a dream for many but achieved by a few. For some, the road to this ambition is through sports; for others, it’s through the armed forces. For Ashutosh Pednekar, a Captain in the Indian Navy, it’s a masterful combination of both. While excelling in one sport is difficult enough, Pednekar’s polyvalent talent with racquet sports has earned him global recognition through the unique and grueling lens of Racketlon.
What is Racketlon?
If you’re wondering what Racketlon is, it is the ultimate test of a racket athlete’s versatility. The format requires competitors to play four sports back-to-back: Table Tennis, Badminton, Squash, and Tennis.
Each game is played for a total of 21 points, and the winner is judged by the most points scored across the four sports. It requires not just physical stamina, but the mental agility to switch techniques—from the feather-light touch of a ping-pong paddle to the heavy power of a tennis racket—all in a single match.
The Foundation: Academic and Military Excellence
Ashutosh Pednekar’s journey began in Panjim, Goa. The son of a dedicated educator (his father retired as the Principal of Govt. Polytechnic Goa in 2002), Ashutosh balanced his early athletic prowess with academic rigor. A 1993 graduate of Goa Engineering College (GEC) in Electronics & Telecommunication, he finished as the topper of his batch at Goa University.
In 1994, he joined the Indian Navy as a Naval Armament Inspection officer. Over 31 years of honorable service, he has held vital appointments in R&D and Quality Control across Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, and New Delhi. His military merit is reflected in three prestigious commendations:
- Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief: 2002 and 2008
- Chief of Naval Staff: 2022
Currently, he serves as the Joint Secretary of the Indian Navy Sports Control Board, overseeing the development of over 550 sportsmen across 24 different disciplines.
A Sporting Dynasty
Athleticism runs in the Pednekar bloodline. Raised by parents who played both badminton and lawn tennis, Ashutosh was the undisputed singles badminton champion in Goa for over a decade (1983–1994). His sister, Leena Pednekar, followed a similar path, recently securing a Bronze medal at the World Senior Badminton Championship in Thailand.
The Global Stage: Racketlon Champion
Despite the grueling commitments of naval life, Pednekar evolved into a multi-sport powerhouse. His crowning achievements on the international stage are historic:
- 2018 (Zurich): Became the first Indian to win a World Racketlon Championship, taking Gold in the Men’s 45+ Singles.
- 2019 (Leipzig): Captained the Indian Team to a maiden title in the Challengers Cup.
- 2022 (Vienna): Achieved the unique distinction of being the only Indian player to win three Gold medals in a single championship (Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles).
The Road to Rotterdam 2026
Captain Pednekar is not resting on his laurels. As of early 2026, his focus is laser-targeted on the upcoming World Racketlon Championship in Rotterdam this August.
At 55, he is training to secure his 5th Individual World Championship title in the Over-55 Singles category. His story remains a powerful reminder that with discipline and passion, one can serve their nation both in uniform and on the podium.
