Air Marshal Sandesh Prabhakar Wagle: Goa's Highest-Ranking Officer in the Indian Air Force

Goa has produced several distinguished officers who have brought honour to the Indian Armed Forces. Among them, Air Marshal Sandesh Prabhakar Wagle, PVSM, VM, occupies a place of exceptional distinction. A native of Margao, he is the only officer from Goa to have attained the rank of Air Marshal, one of the highest appointments in the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Air Marshal Wagle was commissioned into the helicopter stream of the Indian Air Force in 1984 after graduating from the 65th National Defence Academy (NDA) Course (Echo Squadron). Throughout his illustrious career, he flew every operational helicopter type in the IAF inventory, accumulating over 6,000 flying hours across the length and breadth of the country.

His operational experience includes extensive flying in the treacherous heights of the Siachen Glacier during Operation Meghdoot, as well as missions in Sri Lanka under Operation Pawan. These assignments demanded exceptional courage, flying skills, and unwavering commitment under some of the world's most challenging conditions.

Air Marshal Wagle also commanded an Attack Helicopter Squadron in the North-East and later as part of the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. During his tenure in the UN mission, he had the rare distinction of serving alongside a Pakistani Brigade Commander in a multinational peacekeeping environment. Under his leadership, his squadron earned recognition as the Indian Air Force's Best Operational Helicopter Squadron.

As an Air Officer, he commanded Air Force Station Leh, one of the Indian Air Force's most strategically significant bases, responsible for safeguarding India's northern frontiers on two sensitive borders.

At Air Headquarters, he held two important appointments. He served in the Inspector General's Branch, responsible for evaluating the operational effectiveness of all combat units of the Indian Air Force, and later in the Operations Branch as the Principal Director of Helicopter Operations, overseeing all helicopter operations across the service.

His distinguished career also included an appointment in the Defence Intelligence Agency as the Integrated Defence Staff's Principal Assistant, where he was entrusted with defence intelligence analysis concerning India's neighbouring countries, excluding Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

In an earlier assignment, he served on deputation with the Border Security Force (BSF) as Inspector General, where he headed the Air Wing under the Ministry of Home Affairs, overseeing a fleet of fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.

Before his retirement, Air Marshal Wagle was appointed Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff at Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, a prestigious position involving strategic planning and joint military coordination.

Academically accomplished, he holds B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees, besides earning two M.Phil. degrees in Defence and Strategic Studies from the University of Madras and Osmania University.

Air Marshal Wagle is married to Group Captain (Mrs.) Jeeveksha S. Wagle. They have a daughter, an ophthalmologist, and a son who is an engineer.

Air Marshal Sandesh Prabhakar Wagle's remarkable journey—from the skies over Siachen to the highest echelons of the Indian Air Force—stands as an inspiration for the youth of Goa. His outstanding service, leadership, and dedication to the nation have made him a source of immense pride not only for Goa but for the entire country.
