The son of soil and Kargil war Veteran Col Jesus Benino Furtado is the first Goan NCC Cadet who took over as Commanding Officer of 1 Goa Battalion, Naticnal Cadet Corps (NCC) in Panjim since Goa Liberation in 1961.
Colonel Furtado was posted as Commanding Officer of a Meghalaya Battalion NCC prior to this appointment. He joined the Army in 1995. Col Furtado completed his schooling at Loyola High School, Margao, and graduated from Chowgule College, where he was a distinguished NCC cadet in 1993.
Prior to his home coming to Goa, Col Furtado has served in nearly 15 states in the last 27 years.He raised 42 Meghalaya Bn NCC from the scratch.
He served in J & K at the peak of terrorism in the valley when Red Fort in New Delhi & Parliament of India were attacked.
He took part in Operation Vijay in 1999 & Operation Parakram in 2001. He was awarded the Army Chief Commendation Card in Operation Raghu Prahar for Trans LOC operations in Kashmir, which were surgical strikes on terrorists launch pads in the wake of the attack on the Raghunath Mandir in Jammu.
He was also awarded the Assam Government Citation , for peace keeping at the peak of the 2012 Kokrajhar riots in Assam for ensuring peace in a strife torn area.
In the Army he specialised in long distance weapon systems, missiles, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Drones) and Satellite imaging. He served with distinction in the Indian Army’s IIT Division for six years. A BA in Economics initially but due to his military qualifications at the age of 50 , he completed his MSc in GIS & Remote Sensing from the Goa University in 2021.
Col Furtado has also led Indian Army adventure expeditions in the Icy Himalayas and in the Salt Deserts of the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat
